ITIL®

The IT Infrastructure Library™ is a collection of industry best practices for delivering customer-centric IT services at a justifiable cost. The library defines a holistic process framework that recasts IT from a product developer to a service provider. In this way, IT aligns with the needs of the business by proactively managing all aspects of the production environment. In the 1980s, the British government instructed the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency, now known as the Office of Government Commerce, to develop an approach for the efficient and cost effective use of http://www.ogc.gov.uk/ IT resources. The aim was to develop a vendor independent framework, based on observations of best practices within the IT service industry. The project resulted in the creation of the IT Infrastructure Library™ (ITIL®) document series.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, ITIL® became internationally recognized as the de facto standard for IT Service Management. In the spring of 2007, a long-awaited update to the best practice guidance of ITIL® was released. Known as ITIL® Version 3 (v3), the books are framed around the Service Lifecycle, taking a holistic approach to managing services and delivering business value.
